Knight’s book looks as if there’s something there that could be built upon, and perhaps the subsequent novels are of a better quality. It might be worth a read if you want something more akin to a Romeo and Juliet story than an actual adventure.
In a world very much unlike our own, Princess Semara Valderak finds herself in a very difficult position. She must sacrifice a slave to secure her place on the council within her mother's rule; the catch is, she has to not be caught for her own errant powers that are surfacing. Sadly, she's caught with said powers and she's set on trial.
Despite the high hopes I held for this novel, some of it fell a bit flat with the action of the first chapter setting a bar that wasn’t constantly met or pushed. While the idea was admirable, the story slowly sank from action and adventure into a love story with former Princess Semara and her helper, Ryder Arteres. With every right, he should hate her and refuse to help since she did leave his sister to die, but the two work together with the help of a little dwarf to escape and survive.
